An Orthodontist is a specialist dentist with additional years of specialist training and knowledge focused specifically on tooth movement, jaw alignment, and facial development.

Orthodontists first train to become general dentists (and usually practices dentistry for several years). This is then followed by three more years of full-time training purely in the specialty of Orthodontics with an accredited University.

While an Orthodontist is registered as both a dentist and specialist orthodontist, an Orthodontist is restricted to practicing only orthodontics.

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommend children first see an Orthodontist between the age of 7 to 10 years old. At this age, a large number of orthodontic problems can be diagnosed, and sometimes early intervention is recommended to prevent more complicated problems from developing. If early intervention is not indicated, we would recommend treatment would be delayed until the teenage years or adulthood.

The overall length of treatment varies depending on the individual patient and the complexity of the case as every smile responds differently to treatment. Most treatments take between 18-24 months. Limited treatments and minor cases, including early treatment in younger children may only take 6-8 months.
