FAQ's

FAQ's

Below are some commonly asked questions about Orthodontic treatment that you may find useful...

I. How long should I have braces on for?

Orthodontic treatment can span anywhere between 6 months and 30 months depending on the severity of the case. Age can also determine the length of time for Orthodontic treatment.

II. How much does the treatment cost?

The cost of treatment will vary according to whether one or both arches of teeth need treatment; how severe the problem is; the type of braces chosen; and whether there are alternatives to braces. A written quote is given at the consultation visit and there are many payment options available and these are interest-free.

III. What is the difference between metal and ceramic braces?

Metal braces consist of metal brackets fixed to your teeth. Ceramic brackets are clear and less noticeable than metal braces. Many people choose this option to be more discreet with their Orthodontic treatment. Ceramic braces are also attached to the wire with clear or tooth-coloured elastics.

IV. Will I need to have teeth removed?

In some cases teeth may need to be removed, in order to make enough room to fit crowded teeth into position. Fortunately, modern Orthodontics involves a much lower requirement to remove teeth, and, if treated at the correct age, teeth may only need to be removed in 10 to 15 percent of cases.

V. How often do I need to have my braces adjusted?

Adjustment visits are short appointments that generally occur 4 to 8 weeks apart. Dr Ong uses the latest generation of wire technology in the practice, which allows fewer adjustments and greater comfort, while achieving superior results in the same, or lesser time frame. You may feel a little discomfort during these periods, however this will subside within a day or so.

VI. What happens if one of my brackets falls off?

If this happens, visit us and we will simply re-attach it for you. Usually this is not a problem; however, if this does occur please make an appointment with us as soon as possible so we can rectify the problem.

VII. I want braces, but I don’t want it anyone to notice, what can I do?

You have two options. The first is Invisalign, which is an innovative method using only clear aligners to shift your teeth into the correct position. These aligners are worn periodically and changed every two weeks to accommodate for the teeth’s movement. Secondly, you can opt for lingual braces, which are the same as metal braces, but attached behind the teeth.

VIII. What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an Orthodontic treatment using clear aligners to shift the teeth into position. A mould is created using 3D technologies and worn on the teeth for a period of two weeks before the next aligner is worn. They are virtually invisible as they are made from a smooth plastic material.

IX. Do I have to avoid certain foods with Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is removable so there are no restrictions when it comes to consuming your favourite food and drinks. However, it is important to brush your teeth after eating and before you put your aligners back on to prevent plaque build up.

X. What is the difference between normal braces and lingual braces?

The main advantage of Lingual Braces is that they cannot be seen due to their placement on the reverse side of the teeth. However, similar to traditional metal braces, the treatment time remains the same.

XI. What do retainers do?

Upon completion of your Orthodontic treatment, retainers are removable plates that are required to ensure your teeth remain in their correct position. Wearing a retainer is a vital part of your treatment.

XII. I am an adult can I still get braces?

Yes, of course! There is no age restriction on when to get braces. With a variety of options, you can now have braces that are discreet and barely visible. Ceramic braces, Lingual braces and Invisalign are all suitable options!
